DR. MAYS’ WEEK AHEAD An Update from Superintendent Dr. Anthony Mays

September 3, 2024
Dr. Mays

Thanks to everyone who celebrated our ribbon cutting with our new scoreboard. As usual, it feels good to have our community come out and celebrate Alief and the success of our students. With the new scoreboard, our students can gain valuable experience as they run the cameras, create and provide advertisements, and interact with technology that mirrors what they will likely see as they go out to begin their careers. Creating opportunities and experiences like this prepares our students to be production leaders in the entertainment industry.

A special recognition to our Multimedia Specialist Mike Alvarez, Digital Design Teachers Robert Goetsch from CTE and Gerard Brewer and Jason Chastang from Alief Taylor HS, Director of Maintenance and Operations Jeff DeLisle, Athletic Director Marla Brumfield, Assistant Superintendent of Support Services Vinson Lewis, Assistant Superintendent Emeritus Hilda Rodriguez, and Director of Construction and Facilities Glenn Jared, for creating this opportunity for our students.

In the upcoming weeks, I and other administrators will visit campuses and host community conversations to share information on our Voter Approved Tax Rate Election (VATRE). We look forward to speaking with you in the upcoming months.

At the August 19 Board Meeting, the Alief ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to call a voter-approved tax ratification election (VATRE) that will be on the November 5 ballot. The election aims to generate funds to potentially address budgetary shortfalls caused by rising costs for staff, healthcare, fuel, and utilities. District leaders are excited to meet with the community to share more information on the VATRE. If you would like for us to visit your business or organization, please complete this form. All meetings must be completed by the start of early voting on October 21st.

Alief ISD’s Fiscal Fitness is all about keeping things simple and clear for our community. By sharing the real deal on our finances, we aim to clear up any confusion and build a stronger understanding of Texas public school finance.

Alief ISD Literacy MENtors is a reading initiative to increase children’s success in school. Through this initiative, male reading volunteers commit one hour, once per month, to read a book to a class of third-grade students. Sign up here.

This summer TAFE had students who competed at Nationals in Washington DC.  We brought home 2 national championships! Moyin Ajayi, c/o 2024, won 1st place for her competition, Exploring Support Service Careers

The Alief Taylor PSA (Public Service Announcement) Team also won 1st place! This is very exciting news, as this is the first year this particular competition has ever been offered!  Way to set the bar Alief Taylor! PSA team members include: Jayden Petty, Bailey Johnson, Patrick Spiller, Kameron Keller, (all current seniors at ATHS) and Moyin Ajayi (recent Taylor grad).

We are extremely proud of these students and thrilled that they brought home the GOLD!

"I want to thank every campus leader, teacher, student, and parent that has supported visual arts education here in Alief ISD.  It is truly remarkable to receive this type of state distinction for six consecutive years.  This is OUR award Alief, and I’m honored to share the success with each of you."
