Thanks to everyone for staying the course as we work to meet the needs of our students. Despite the adversities that can exist as we work to meet all the challenges that come our way, I am grateful to have a team that works hard on behalf of Alief students. As the seasons change and we head into fall, cold and flu season can take a toll on our operations. We see more and more educators becoming ill. I encourage you to take care of yourselves.
Despite a 32.7 billion dollar surplus, our 88th Legislature did not increase the basic student allotment. Amid the rising fuel, insurance, and utilities costs, the basic student allotment remains $6,160 and has not changed since 2019. Alief's ability to do more with less is impressive, given the challenges associated with having the funds needed to appropriately meet the needs of our student population. According to this Kinder Institute Report, we need $24,363 to fund the needs of Alief students adequately.
As we approach the November elections, I want to encourage everyone to register to vote. Check your registration status here! While many things are out of our control, voting continues to be a powerful tool for bringing about change.
