TIA Component Focus: Student Growth
In each edition of the TIA Tuesdays newsletter, we will shine a light on a TIA designated teacher in Alief ISD. This special section will provide an opportunity for designated teachers to share their unique experiences with TIA.
This month, we are thrilled to shine a spotlight on Nikki Babineaux-Henry, an exceptional 11th and 12th-grade CTE Business Management Teacher at Alief Early College High School. Ms. Babineaux-Henry's dedication to her students truly set her apart. Her unwavering commitment to her students is truly inspiring, and she attributes her TIA designation to her deep passion for teaching and her genuine love for her students.
Ms. Babineaux-Henry's advice to aspiring TIA designees is both heartfelt and insightful: "Teach your content with passion and love your students. Your heart has to be in educating students each day and building relationships with every student." This profound advice reflects Ms. Babineaux-Henry's own teaching philosophy, emphasizing the importance of fostering meaningful connections with students while delivering engaging and impactful lessons.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Ms. Babineaux-Henry for the invaluable love and passion she brings to the students of Alief ISD. Her dedication serves as an inspiration to educators and students alike, and we are honored to celebrate her remarkable achievements!
I wanted to provide you with an update regarding the release of TIA Scorecards for data captured during the 2023-24 school year. Based on the teacher types that were verified during the Teacher Type Verification Window this past August, we are in the process of submitting data via application to TEA this month. Our goal is to release the TIA Scorecards later this fall via Abre to teachers who were TIA eligible in the 2023-24 school year.
You may recall that TIA Scorecards for data captured during the 2022-23 school year were released in April of 2024. This year, we are aiming to release the scorecards sooner to allow teachers the opportunity to make necessary adjustments to their instruction that may increase their chances of earning a TIA Designation based on data captured during the 2024-25 school year. It's important to note that any TIA Designation listed on your TIA Scorecard is pending TEA approval of Alief ISD's TIA system. We will share more information regarding the TIA Scorecard in the coming weeks, so please stay tuned for further updates.
To determine TIA designations, Alief ISD's TIA system utilizes 3 teacher effectiveness measures:
Classroom Instruction
Student Growth
Student Perception
In the October edition of TIA Tuesdays, we will take a deeper look into the Student Growth component of TIA. Please see below for the growth measures utilized in Alief ISD's TIA system. The student growth components comprise various percentages of a teacher’s designation (see Appendix B of the TIA Handbook)
Student Learning Objectives (SLOs) are student growth goals set by teachers to help them plan instruction and drive student learning throughout the year. SLOs are a component of all teacher's TIA scores regardless of the content taught. This year, we have created the SLO Expectation 2024-25 document to support teachers as they implement and collect data. At this point in the year, teachers should have administered Progress Check #1 for all students and recorded data on their student growth tracker. The window for Progress Check #2 opens today, October 15, 2024.
The schoolwide STAAR score represents the growth of ALL students at the school as assessed by STAAR. All TIA-eligible teachers will have a schoolwide growth score used as one of their TIA measures. Even teachers who are not in STAAR-tested subjects will receive a schoolwide growth score.
A schoolwide STAAR score is calculated for each school in Alief ISD and is purposed to demonstrate the collective influence that all teachers in a school have on its students, regardless of the subject or grade level.
Every teacher in a school will receive the same Schoolwide Growth score. The calculation of a schoolwide growth score is an aggregation of the STAAR growth data for all students on that campus.
*There will be no Schoolwide STAAR minimum threshold to earn a TIA Designation for data captured during the 2023-24 school year.
