TIA Component Focus: Student Growth
In each edition of the TIA Tuesdays newsletter, we will shine a light on a TIA designated teacher in Alief ISD. This special section will provide an opportunity for designated teachers to share their unique experiences with TIA.
This month, we are thrilled to shine a spotlight on Janeth Montalvo, an exceptional Pre-K Bilingual Teacher at Martinez Early Learning Center. Ms. Montalvo understands that building meaningful relationships with her students is key in inspiring her students to succeed. She presents herself with a growth-mindset to remain abreast of new strategies to keep her students engaged in their learning by utilizing a variety of resources such as technology in the classroom. Ms. Montalvo’s dedication and loyalty to her student’s education are the contributions in her earning a TIA Exemplary designation. She exhibits a great passion for teaching, and it is evident in all areas of preparation and planning to lesson delivery and beyond.
Ms. Montalvo’s advice to aspiring TIA designees is to take the time to truly know your students by building a bond and making connections. This opens a two-way communication pathway of trust and establishes a safe learning environment. Personalize instruction to reach all your students by applying best practices and tailoring lessons to their unique needs.
We are very thankful for Ms. Montalvo’s loyalty to our students in Alief ISD. Her dedication inspires curiosity, imagination, and a love for learning to her students.
Student Perception Surveys will be administered by an external vendor, Thought Exchange, to students in grades 3-12. These surveys represent a best practice in measuring teacher performance, as research shows that data from student perception surveys are strongly correlated with student achievement. Student perception surveys represent a unique opportunity for teachers to gather feedback on whether or not students feel sufficiently challenged, engaged, and comfortable asking for help.
The survey window is January 27-February 14. Survey topics include Meaningful Work (Pedagogical Effectiveness, Classroom Rigorous Expectations, Classroom Learning Strategies) and Meaningful Relationships (Teacher-Student Relationships, Classroom Belonging).
To determine TIA designations, Alief ISD's TIA system utilizes 3 teacher effectiveness measures:
Classroom Instruction
Student Growth
Student Perception
In the October edition of TIA Tuesdays, we took a deeper look into the Student Growth component of TIA. Please see below for the growth measures utilized in Alief ISD's TIA system. The student growth components comprise various percentages of a teacher’s designation (see Appendix B of the TIA Handbook)
Student Learning Objectives (SLOs) are student growth goals set by teachers to help them plan instruction and drive student learning throughout the year. SLOs are a component of all teacher's TIA scores regardless of the content taught. This year, we have created the SLO Expectation 2024-25 document to support teachers as they implement and collect data. At this point in the year, teachers should have administered Progress Check #1 and #2 for all students and recorded data on their student growth tracker. The window for Progress Check #3 opened, November 8, 2024.
The schoolwide STAAR score represents the growth of ALL students at the school as assessed by STAAR. All TIA-eligible teachers will have a schoolwide growth score used as one of their TIA measures. Even teachers who are not in STAAR-tested subjects will receive a schoolwide growth score.
A schoolwide STAAR score is calculated for each school in Alief ISD and is purposed to demonstrate the collective influence that all teachers in a school have on its students, regardless of the subject or grade level.
Every teacher in a school will receive the same Schoolwide Growth score. The calculation of a schoolwide growth score is an aggregation of the STAAR growth data for all students on that campus.
*There will be no Schoolwide STAAR minimum threshold to earn a TIA Designation for data captured during the 2023-24 school year.
