Veterans Day 2024

e

Veterans Day 2024 is a nationally observed holiday in the United States that honors and pays tribute to all military veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. This day recognizes the bravery, sacrifice, and patriotism of veterans and serves as an opportunity for the nation to express gratitude for their service and dedication.

What is Veterans Day?

Veterans Day, originally known as Armistice Day, was first celebrated on November 11, 1919, to commemorate the end of World War I. It was officially recognized as a federal holiday in 1938 and was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 to honor all American veterans, both living and deceased.

When is Veterans Day 2024?

Veterans Day is observed annually on November 11th. In 2024, it falls on a Saturday. However, if it falls on a weekend, it is typically observed on the nearest weekday (Friday or Monday) to allow for a federal holiday.

History of Veterans Day

The history of Veterans Day is rooted in the end of World War I when an armistice, or cease-fire, was declared on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. This event marked the end of hostilities in the war, and November 11th became a day to remember and honor veterans.

Veterans Day was officially designated as a holiday to honor all veterans in 1954 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. It has since been a day of reflection and appreciation for the military service of veterans from all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Honoring Service: Lieutenant Byron Conner

Lieutenant Byron Conner, U.S. Navy Veteran

*Taylor High School Teacher of the Year 22-23

*TIA Recognized Teacher 23-24

As Veterans Day approaches, we celebrate the contributions of those who have served in the military, including Taylor High School Teacher Lieutenant Byron Conner. A proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, Mr. Conner reflects on his journey and the profound impact of service, both during his military career and in his role as an educator.

Lt. Conner is deeply grateful for the veterans who paved the way for him and for the opportunities the military has afforded him. He takes pride in leaving a legacy for his children and grandchildren, emphasizing the importance of protecting the rights of all U.S. citizens. Among his many accomplishments, he highlights his humanitarian efforts in Africa, his service during Operation Desert Storm, and his role in response to Hurricane Katrina.

Throughout his career, Lt. Conner has dedicated himself to supporting fellow sailors. He believes in the power of mentorship and leadership, striving to inspire those around him. He maintains connections with many of the sailors he guided, underscoring the lasting bonds formed through shared experiences.

As a teacher, Lt. Conner translates the lessons learned from the military into the classroom. He emphasizes the importance of leadership and the value of giving back to the community. His greatest hope for his students is to nurture their leadership qualities, preparing them to make a positive impact on the world.

On Veterans Day, Lt. Conner encourages non-veterans to appreciate the significance of this day. He believes it’s an opportunity to recognize the sacrifices of veterans and to understand that the military offers invaluable experiences for those willing to serve. He urges everyone to take a moment to ask questions, reflect, and express gratitude toward veterans.

In celebrating Veterans Day, we honor the legacy of service exemplified by Lieutenant Byron Conner and countless others. Their commitment to our country and community continues to inspire future generations. As we recognize their contributions, let us also find ways to appreciate and support those who have served, ensuring their sacrifices are never forgotten.

Applications for the 2025 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards are open until December 2

H-E-B is now accepting applications for the 2025 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards, which awards cash prizes to educators who go the extra mile to serve their students and their communities. All state-certified public school educators currently teaching in Texas are eligible to apply before December 2, 2024 at heblovesteachers.com/apply/.

Since 2002, the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards program has awarded more than $14 million in funding to finalists, winners, and their schools.

Finalists and winners will be selected by a panel of judges composed of educators, administrators, and community leaders throughout the state. Ten winners—six teachers, two counselors and two principals—along with an early childhood facility, public school board, and two school districts, will be announced at an awards ceremony in May 2025. Each award recipient’s school will also receive a matching grant.

Why Gratitude Matters:

Boosts Morale: Expressing gratitude can lift spirits and motivate teams, leading to increased productivity and satisfaction.

Strengthens Relationships: Recognizing the efforts of others cultivates a sense of belonging and trust within teams.

Enhances Well-Being: Gratitude is linked to lower stress levels and improved mental health, making it essential for a thriving workplace.

Ways to Practice Gratitude:

Acknowledge Efforts: Take a moment to thank a colleague for their hard work or support.

Share Positive Feedback: Encourage team members to recognize each other’s contributions during meetings.

Create a Gratitude Board: Set up a space where employees/ colleagues can post notes of appreciation for their peers.

Try this Team Building Activity!

e

Gratitude is the act of being thankful and appreciative of the things we have in our lives, no matter how big or small.

Another way to practice gratitude is by creating a Gratitude Wall Tree. Use this activity to focus on the positive aspects of life and express gratitude in a visible way.

Gratitude Wall Tree

Choose a location: It could be a wall or a bulletin board, or even a piece of paper that you hang up.

Cut out leaves: Cut out leaf shapes. You'll want enough leaves to fill up your tree.

Write down what you're grateful for: On each leaf, team members will write down something they're grateful for. It could be a person, a place, a thing, or an experience. Try to focus on the positive aspects of life.

Hang up your leaves: Using tape or pushpins, hang up leaves on your gratitude wall tree. As more leaves are added over time, your tree will grow and flourish.

Research has shown that practicing gratitude can have a positive impact on mental health — reducing stress, anxiety, and depression, and increasing happiness and well-being (Wood et. al, 2010).

We would love to see your Gratitude Wall Trees, so please share them!
