TIA Component Focus: Student Growth
In each edition of the TIA Tuesdays newsletter, we will shine a light on a TIA designated teacher in Alief ISD. This special section will provide an opportunity for designated teachers to share their unique experiences with TIA.
This month, we are thrilled to shine a spotlight on Radhiya Wiley, an exceptional Math Teacher at Hastings High School. Ms. Wiley shared that there are many wonderful reasons for working at Alief ISD, besides from it being the best district in the Houston area. She absolutely enjoys seeing the growth her students make as they reach each milestone in their academic career. Another important factor is the long-term relationships she has built with her colleagues. Ms. Wiley is aware that building positive and meaningful relationships is key in establishing a work environment that fosters learning and the importance of team collaboration. She also plays a big role in extending these values to her community with an emphasis on community involvement and outreach.
Ms. Wiley advises inspiring TIA designees to be confident and to be open to learning new things. Teaching is an ever-evolving career and we educators must be abreast of new techniques to keep our students engaged. Be aware of your strength and at the same time know your areas of improvement. Reflect on what went well in your lessons and adjust what didn’t go very well.
Alief ISD is very grateful for all the hard work and dedication that Ms. Wiley provides to her students!
Know your Teacher Ambassador!
Each campus in Alief ISD has an assigned Teacher Ambassador Representative at their campus. Your Teacher Ambassador plays a crucial role in sharing very time-sensitive and in-depth information to your campus. Each month our TAC meetings provide new information and provide clarity to any misconceptions. After each meeting you can expect to receive updates from your Teacher Ambassador during your regularly scheduled staff meetings. This is a great opportunity to have discussions with your colleagues and to ask any additional questions, wonderings, or simply seek understanding.
What Does TEA Say About TIA?
We are aware that teachers are eager to review their scorecards and we want to thank you all for your patience in the process. Scorecards are currently under review and will be release to campus principals upon our return in January from the winter break. Scorecards will be released to teachers before the end of January.
Student Perception Surveys will be administered by an external vendor, Thought Exchange, to students in grades 3-12. These surveys represent a best practice in measuring teacher performance, as research shows that data from student perception surveys are strongly correlated with student achievement. Student perception surveys represent a unique opportunity for teachers to gather feedback on whether or not students feel sufficiently challenged, engaged, and comfortable asking for help.
The survey window is from January 27-February 14. Student Perception survey topics include Meaningful Work (Pedagogical Effectiveness, Classroom Rigorous Expectations, Classroom Learning Strategies) and Meaningful Relationships (Teacher-Student Relationships, Classroom Belonging).
Thought Exchange - Survey Coordinators and Admin Training will be held via ZOOM on January 8th at 11:00am or 3:00pm. There will be two sessions available. Coordinators and Admin must only attend one session.
Student Learning Objectives (SLOs) are student growth goals set by teachers to help them plan instruction and drive student learning throughout the year. SLOs are a component of all teacher's TIA scores regardless of the content taught. This year, we have created the SLO Expectation 2024-25 document to support teachers as they implement and collect data. At this point in the year, teachers should have administered Progress Check #1,#2, and #3 for all students and recorded data on their student growth tracker. The window for Progress Check #4 opened, December 11, 2024.
The schoolwide STAAR score represents the growth of ALL students at the school as assessed by STAAR. All TIA-eligible teachers will have a schoolwide growth score used as one of their TIA measures. Even teachers who are not in STAAR-tested subjects will receive a schoolwide growth score.
A schoolwide STAAR score is calculated for each school in Alief ISD and is purposed to demonstrate the collective influence that all teachers in a school have on its students, regardless of the subject or grade level.
Every teacher in a school will receive the same Schoolwide Growth score. The calculation of a schoolwide growth score is an aggregation of the STAAR growth data for all students on that campus.
For campuses that a campus STAAR score cannot be developed, a STAAR/EOC will be utilized as follows:
For teachers at Jefferson ELC and Martinez ELC - Utilize district Grade 4 STAAR composite to replace Schoolwide STAAR score.
For teachers at SOAR/LINC and Center for Advanced Careers - Utilize district EOC STAAR composite to replace Schoolwide STAAR score.
*There will be no Schoolwide STAAR minimum threshold to earn a TIA Designation for data captured during the 2023-24 school year.
