TIA Teacher Feedback
In each edition of the TIA Tuesdays newsletter, we will shine a light on a TIA designated teacher in Alief ISD. This special section will provide an opportunity for designated teachers to share their unique experiences with TIA.
This month’s spotlight is on Alissa Wells, a 9-12th grade Orchestra teacher from Alief Taylor High School. Ms. Wells has 21 years of experience teaching and 18 of those years have been dedicated to serving our very own Alief ISD students. She currently holds a Recognized TIA Designation.
Ms. Wells enjoys working in Alief ISD because of the autonomy she has in her position. She appreciates being able to design plans and programs that are appropriate for the development of aspiring musicians. As always, Alief ISD appreciates Ms. Wells for her hard work and dedication to our students.
The TIA Annual Evaluation Survey, developed by Texas Tech University, is administered each spring to teachers, principals, and human resources. The survey is designed to gauge perceptions and support for the local designation system after implementation. The administration of these surveys is required for continued system approval.
Results are used as part of a continuous improvement cycle to monitor the perception and impact of the local designation system. Districts receive survey results in early July and must analyze and respond to the results in their Annual Program Submission the following fall.
This survey will be sent to all TIA-eligible teachers on May 7th and close May 24th.
All pending TIA designations have been officially approved by TEA! New state-recognized designations will be reflected on the teacher's teaching certificate by the end of May. All TIA-designated teachers will receive the bonus TIA payment on their last paycheck this month. The funding map has been updated to reflect the new campus allotments per designation level for the 24-25 school year. https://tiatexas.org/funding-map/
Alief is proud to announce that we have 118 newly-designated teachers! This brings the total number of teachers holding a TIA-designation in Alief ISD to 180. Together, these teachers will be receiving a total of $1.6 million in extra bonus payments.
TEA makes payments to the district for each TIA-designated teacher. These payments as referred to as “TIA allotments”. The district retains 10% of the TIA allotment to pay for the TIA growth assessments and employer fees associated with submitting teachers for TIA designations. The remaining 90% is awarded to the teacher as a TIA bonus payment on their last paycheck in May. This payment is subject to federal taxes and fees, including TRS contributions. TIA-designated teachers will receive email communication from TEA in late May, outlining their designation status and the total allotment amount generated from their designation.
TIA and Retirement
All TIA compensation is TRS eligible. TRS has limits (10% or 10,000 increase per year) on eligible salary increases in the last 3 or 5 years prior to retirement which could limit the extent to which the TIA compensation paid in those years is TRS eligible. A member can “work out of the limit” – the member will need to contact a TRS Benefit Counselor when they are ready to retire to determine if this limit will impact their retirement annuity calculation. Even though deductions and retirement may take a portion of the allotment, the gross amount is what goes toward your retirement for the top 5 years.
Alief is dedicated to helping our students and teachers alike achieve success through the implementation of our TIA designation system. Providing feedback is vital to improving our system and growing. Please take some time to share your experience with TIA this school year in Alief ISD on the form below. This survey allows for comments and is more detailed than the survey being sent by TEA. This survey will close in mid-June.
